France.tv, & TVU Networks Broadcast in partnership in the Paris 2024 Olympic Flame via Cloud-Based, 5G Network

In collaboration with TVU Networks, France Télévisions broadcast the Olympic flame relay using an innovative 100% cloud-based and 5G/Starlink network. France.tv's Paris 2024 coverage has provided 10 hours of live coverage daily, following the 1625 km journey through the France.tv app, connected TVs, and digital platforms hosting France.tv.

Dedicated to enhancing energy and environmental sustainability, the group is revolutionizing its broadcasting methods by adopting cloud technology, 5G, Starlink, and drones for the flame’s journey. For this endeavor, France Télévisions has selected the comprehensive tools and ecosystem offered by TVU Networks.

This innovative approach, even for simple live productions, becomes groundbreaking when applied to every aspect of production for an event of such scale and complexity. This includes live feeds, multi-camera switching, graphics, commentaries, audio mixing, intercom, and playout. To ensure coverage of the flame’s journey, the project utilizes AWS infrastructure to deliver an optimal experience. By integrating TVU Networks’ solutions throughout the entire media workflow, this partnership achieves the first end-to-end cloud broadcast for a major event, opening up endless possibilities for new content that deeply resonates with audiences.

“It’s about working together, challenging what we accept as possible,” says Paul Shen, CEO of TVU Networks, emphasizing the collaborative effort in turning visions into reality. “This isn’t just a milestone; it’s a wake-up call to the industry. The future of broadcast is here, and it’s accessible, sustainable, and opens up endless possibilities for bringing more content to fans everywhere.”

The broadcaster utilised two Starlink Maritime systems and the 5G network to address the challenges of cellular bandwidth on the moving boats.

The TVU RPS One backpack transmitter, equipped with 5G modems, was employed to transmit synchronized signals from multiple cameras to the TVU remote cloud production platform, combining 5G and Starlink connectivity.

Additionally, a motorcycle on land was outfitted with a TVU One 5G transmitter to capture extra footage.

The TVU Producer cloud-based platform was the cornerstone of the production, enabling seamless collaboration among team members, with much of the work conducted remotely from a France Télévisions studio.

Additionally, camera feeds were transmitted redundantly to both the TVU Producer cloud platform and the studio, offering automatic backup in case of unforeseen circumstances and ensuring uninterrupted broadcasting.
